Présentation

The roots of the Act Respecting Fabriques (or Fabrique Act) can be found from the beginnings of the colony of New France. In 1965 a first version of it was approved under this title, and the most recent major changes to it were made in 1993. It remains useful and relevant for managing a variety of common situations in the life of parish fabriques.

This new commentary on the Fabrique Act answers a need that has often been expressed. Indeed, the evolution of situations that arise in parishes has made it more and more difficult, in recent years, to interpret and apply this increasingly complex law. The purpose of this text is to allow concerned individuals to gain a better understanding of the intention of the law, its possibilities and its limits, and so to guide them towards appropriate and even innovative solutions.

Prepared under the aegis of the Assembly of Québec Catholic Bishops, the editorial committee for this text was chaired by Mr. Germain Tremblay and consisted of Fr. Guy boulanger, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke; Msgr. Simon Héroux, vicar-general of the Diocese of Nicolet (chancellor at the time of drafting); Canon Jean Tailleur, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Québec; Mr. Denis Charpentier, CPA, CA, bursar of the Diocese of Saint-Hyacinthe; Mr. Normand Paquette, bursar of the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke; and Me. Yvan Thériault, bursar of the Diocese of Sainte-Anne- de-la-Pocatière.
